Rod Sutherland's Day Camp Memories

1981

Here is a picture that I took in 1981 of the entire camp spelling out CBCDC. We were at the Dallas Cowboys training camp in Thousand Oaks that day, and while we were waiting for the players to come out and start practicing, Ed, Ron and I came up with this idea to help kill some time. With the help of Christie and Lori Thrash (who are the two counselors sitting outside of the letters) we got the kids in order and then I climbed up to the top of one of the coaching towers out on the practice field (about 30 feet above the field). I took about 3 or 4 shots, a couple of which I know were better than this one, before the Cowboys staff started heading out to the field and yelling at me to get down from the tower. I am sending you this scan in the mean time, but I am hoping that either Ron Jones or Lo Mielke has the better ones of these shots.

Here are 3 photos (Ed & Laura, Shannon Bratton, Ringbearer) from 1981 (I think; Ed will have to confirm the date) when Ed and Laura were married. The two boys pictured were in day camp that summer and Ed had them involved in the wedding. The one dressed in the dark suite and ruffled shirt is Shannon Bratton. The one dressed in the light colored suite was in the wedding as a ring bearer, but I cannot remember his name (again, Ed and Laura can possibly fill in that information). Not only did people meet and make friends during the summers at CBCDC, but some even found love and got married.

1982

Here are some pics from 1982 sent to me by Lo Mielke to scan for him. The first is myself, Rick, Ed and Don Knox as AWANA leaders (our non-summer time lives working with kids). Next is Carole Lawton (now ?) and Sheri (Black) Mielke, and last is Ed with Lo and his puppet named ???.

Can anyone name the two campers in the last pic. from 1982? My memory definitely fails me on those two.
[Ron Jones has alerted us that the two campers are "none other than Jamie and Carrie Kinsfather."]

1983

Can that really be Ron Jones on the bike (August 1983)?
I thought he drove a Volkswagen to work!

Let's not forget the tireless servants who cleaned up after the messes that were made at CBCDC; I am of course talking about Ron Jong, pictured here in June of 1983.

1984

Lo will have to fill in the details on the poster of Dewey Bertolini from 1984.
